Housebreaking a New Puppy

As exciting as bringing home a new puppy is, training them can be a nightmare if you are not aware of what practices to avoid and know what tricks do work. A very good method to house breaking is crate training, where you keep the puppy in a crate for periods of time throughout the day. If you are considering this method, please know that it is not an end all problem and takes time, patience, and a positive attitude.

Choosing a Crate

Make sure you buy a crate that is an appropriate size for your puppy’s breed. They need something big enough to feel comfortable in and have a little bit of stretching room. Anything bigger and your puppy will eliminate everywhere.

Getting Ready

Fill the crate with soft blankets and toys. You want your puppy to view it as a fun, comfortable place of their own. Putting a small dog bed in there is a good idea.

Introducing the Crate

Your puppy should be gradually introduced into their new crate using treats. Do not force them in and then shut the door. Allow them to roam in and explore the crate with the door open.

This process should be gradual. Lure them into the crate with a treat and them there with the door closed for 30 seconds, then a minute, and so on. Provide a lot of praise both when entering and exiting the crate.

Consistency is Key

Do not fall victim to whining and crying. This is normal behavior at first and you should ignore it as to not encourage your puppy to cry until you let them out. Also, make sure that when you take them out of the crate you always direct them to the spot where you want them to eliminate. This helps them develop the idea they are only supposed to go where you take them to.
